The most clearly omission from the music app is no fast forward button, dragging the cursor on the screen is very imprecise. This app has not changed much in 10 years

No longer will play music from my iTunes library. “Unable to stream this file via remote player.” Wants me to convert my entire iTunes library to mp3. Used to work, now it don’t.
It used to work but now nothing plays without being downloaded first.
Apparently the answer from the blog is disable encryption on your NAS which is a no go for me. I live in a major city with a pretty big tech scene and I’m not about to send my password in plane text over to WiFi in an apartment in the city. No guidance from the developers. I suspect having a certificate authority with a trusted cert might work but I’m not about to waste hours of time for an assumption. Synology is supposed to be a company “focused on software” but this doesn’t feel like a good example. The app should be removed/delisted from the App Store or proper guidance should be provided from the company. Amount of time I wasted on this issue: 2 hours.
Won’t play any of the songs on my NAS. Just skips each one till the playlist is finished. I keep hoping that they will fix this issue with each update but it is never fixed. I thought maybe my settings were not setup properly but I can’t see any issue there. Would love to use this more often but I just can’t seem to get it to work.
This app straight up doesn’t work
This app used to work great. After mid-2024 a number of bugs appeared. First, when I select an album to play the app downloads three copies of each track, so you get to listen to each track three times. Second, when some tracks play they skip, like a vinyl disc skipping. If you reload the track it plays fine. Third, sometimes in the middle of a track it skips on to the next track. This is a great pity since the format of the app is about the best out there. I now use Music Streamer. Not such a nice interface but it has none of the problems of DSMusic.
After last update the airplayicon has disappeared while in app. The only way to select an airplay device is to start your music. Lock your screen. From the Lock Screen the AirPlay icon exists. Select it and th n AirPlay device. So it technically still works but—that needs fixed
In CarPlay it regularly shows “logging in”. If you use the phone to play a song it will play it, and you can switch to the Currently Playing view and see the song playing. Not sure why it needs to log in more.
Love the functionality provided. Needs a little more love from devs to be perfect!
Like others mentioned, the app constantly skip to the next song for no reason. Please fix the issue. Thanks! Feature request: could you add the functionality to edit playlists while playing songs? A simple “Add song to playlist” function would do.
It’s a neglected afterthought and an absolute embarrassment of an app that has the same old stale design and bug-ridden UI that it’s had for nearly a decade now. It’s the kind of app you’d expect from a freshman college student rather than a company that powers data solutions for half the Fortune 500. It just barely checks enough boxes to be considered a functional music player, but you’ll quickly discover that the only reason this app still exists is so that Synology’s marketing department can legally advertise “your own personal music streaming service” or some nonsense. It’s such a shame too, considering how great the rest of the Synology OS looks and operates.
I have a large music collection on my nas of flac music files, and it is really nice to be able to stream my own collection to my phone anywhere. I hope this app stays around because idk how my family and I would enjoy our music on our phones without.
8/31/24 problems -App is now randomly skipping to next song while playing and not even touching phone -You cannot make new playlists from downloaded playlist, only when you’re connected to the server. -You can’t see what song is currently playing in a playlist. -No way to search songs. -You can ONLY add to playlist from the playlist, not from the playing page. -You cannot scrub through songs. -Doesn’t remember last state when closing. Should be able to resume last state including play position and queue. -Would be nice if we got an audio file on our phone that we could add it to playlist or upload it to server without using ds file and waiting for it to update. -Would be super nice if we could access the menu without having to leave the folder we’re in when browsing folders. If you’re 5 folders deep, you have to hit back 5 times to access playlist. VERY annoying. Always losing position.
It does most of it is job well but a) It will start playing music randomly in the last selected device. This has happened both on a Sonos speaker and a Naim unit I. b) CarPlay is half baked. It insists on connecting to the server and will not play music already downloaded on the app!!!
When I play a song, it should ONLY play that extra songs if there's nothing in a queue. If I tap track 3 on an album, then go and add a different song to the queue, that different song should be next, not tracks 4-12 of the first album.
Does what is expected, would be great if there was a dark them for night use.
I have no complaints with this app. I moved my music collection to synology NAS and the previous music app (cloud beats) on my iphone didn’t connect easily. This one connected in a second and Inhad no issues ever since. It’s fast, shows all my thumbnails, keeps only the music on the phone that I want, the rest stays on the NAS. It works with Apple car play.
This was my go-to player until I had a vehicle with Apple CarPlay. App shows up as CarPlay-compatible, and it sorta is, but only if you are logged into your server, even if you have downloaded music to the phone.
New customer of Synology NAS I’ve been pretty happy with most aspects of my NAS but the music app/server looks incredibly outdated. It works, but it’s could definitely use a refresh and updated UI
If you wouldn’t develop a separate edition for MacOS, please just allow MacOS’ users to download it officially. I’ve tried PlayCover to side-load DS audio, and the app works fine as it performs on iPad.
I have been a dedicated Synology user for 15+ years and I think they are great NAS devices, but Synology do phone it in when it comes to the “consumer”-focused apps that they provide. It works but it doesn’t offer a whole lot. Expect to do your metadata management elsewhere. Also, why are the locally downloaded files put in some hidden location inaccessible to the Apple Files app? It’s really annoying I can’t access them or manage them from other apps.
The good part is that it will play my music from my home server. The bad part is the UI, ability to navigate around my files, weird login issues that require me to open the app 2-3 times, etc. Ultimately not sure it’s worth it.
I think the latest iOS might have broken logging into DS Audio entirely :(
Please fix this bug as soon as possible
Firstly, I would like to honestly say, if this app functions correctly, I would love the features it provided and currently I couldn’t find any alternatives. However, this app contains too many bugs and I couldn’t believe synology, as a commercial company that builds solid NAS, doesn’t know how to fix those flaws. They can, but they choose ignorance. If you see this review, please fix these bugs as soon as possible. 1. It can’t remember my username and password, and it always logs me out every single day. 2. The CarPlay side app is so bad. At least you should add a feature to allow playing by folders and to see what songs are in the playlist. 3. The music won’t automatically stop when I leave my car and disconnect the CarPlay.
Upgraded from ds214play to ds1522+ and app stopped working. It shows an infinite loading screen regardless of connection and account type. It can play downloaded songs and radio only. I am returning it an moving to self managed NAS.
can not play songs without download
How in the world do you get this app to STOP???? I hit the stop button. Change the output device from my stereo back to iPhone. Then go and play music from the regular iPhone music app. When I’m done playing from the iPhone music app this app reconnects back to my stereo and starts playing music ALL BY ITSELF!!! Just stop playing. HOW DO YOU DO THIS????? I don’t want to hear any more music. If I want more music then I’ll play it on my own. STOP DOING THIS AUTOMATICALLY !!!!!!! I killed the app. Not running. Then 15 minutes later it starts playing music ALL BY ITSELF. Why can’t I just get this to stop???????
The app only allows me to download the music I already put on my drive. Won’t let me stream without downloading, making this “simple” process just pointless.
Honestly, I think it is a good app, however it needs some major UI change. UI feels old and outdated. It also lucks some important features.
Synology has removed AAC support making DS Audio useless. If you are trying to send music in AAC (which is majority of Internet radiostations) via Airplay starting with DSM 7.1 you are wasting your time, codec has been removed and stations are no longer playable via DS Audio. Synology shall give customers a choice to pay for AAC codec if they need. Just ordered QNAP will test it.
Pls check the app : tubecasts to make function the same like that, we need fast play the track, pls add 1x, 1.25x,... And have download offline for phone version to play offline audio files incase no LTE. Thanks
This app remembers your spot in the track you were last listening to, but it remembers it individually for each distinct listening mode and device you use so it’s essentially useless. Listening to music while in the car and n your way to the gym, then expect it to pick up where you left off when you go inside and put in your headphones? Nope. It remembers the last thing you listened to when you last used those headphones. And that’s if it even actually does remember your place. Absolutely mind boggling choice (or perhaps oversight) by the developers. I’ll give it a pity star for actually syncing to my NAS properly.
In my iPad it always run a song forward. And never know where I was
Suddenly stopped working after iOS upgrade. Android app works fine, NAS working fine, app download and listing songs working fine. Just cannot streaming songs. Auto cache also not working. Have to download the song manually before you play it. Please fix the bug!
First off, nothing I do or change seems to let me log in with https turned on. Second, there are some very basic things missing which are available in the Audio Station desktop UI which make this imminently less usable: no recently added section, you can’t change the sort order in any view, and there’s no search. I wish this app was more useful because I’d love to see it become my new standard, but when the app is this old and this immature, I can tell I’m better off searching for an alternative.
The app allows streaming from NAS directly to a BOSE sound bar, something apparently not doable with the BOSE app. But the app is NOT at all intuitive: such as simply playing a Playlist, or viewing the Now Playing queue. Good luck finding that.
Please update the user interface to match other music apps like Spotify, YouTube music and Apple music, your app is outdated for ease of use, layout and interface should be updated as it looks like music apps from 10 years ago
I couldn’t login, but all the information I can find are just too technical, basically not useful. Very disappointing service.
I appreciate the team creating such a great app with awesome potential. I still can’t sign with quick connect on network. I can connect only on my wifi. I thought initially it was problem with my network, but I can remotely access photos and other apps. I even changed our router but still can’t sign up. Please fix it. Thank you Update: it started working today. Not sure what happened. Only other recommendation is make menu and icons more modern. Thanks so much!
I used to be able to stream via Chromecast Audio. This version cannot do that although on the screen it says it could. ****Update on Nov 1, 2021 The latest version 5.16.3 still hasn’t fixed the Chromecast issue.
After iOS 15 is updated, the CarPlay playlist cannot be loaded normally. Please fix it
Can no longer cast to Chromecast devices. Other apps on my phone still can.
I love that I can stream exactly what content I want, even specific albums on my NAS. The problem with the app is that if you’re running it through Bluetooth on your phone, once you get out and back in the car, the app makes you reconnect and doesn’t remember previous status, even if you don’t close the app. Plus it doesn’t buffer all that efficiently, so if you run into a dead spot the app stops playing, then makes you log back in once you get the signal back. All this makes it way to inconvenient to use.
After seeing so many poor reviews of all the Synology DS apps, they now all seem functional and quite quick with DSM 7. The DRIVE app esp took some work to get up and running, prob because the NAS was indexing when I first updated. Big improvement over login probs etc under DSM 6.
Please revise it. Thx
This app is great for very simple music playing but horrible for audio books. It can’t keep track of any order or history so audio books are horrible to use with it. It doesn’t have any quick jump forward or backward to find spots and it constantly logs you out and resets the track if you pause the audio for too long (couple of minutes). Has some improvement to make it a great app but like I said for a basic music player it’s ok.
Airplay, chromecast, if I streamed to these devices, the music cannot stop. Have to reboot HomePod etc
